When was Vincent Place Incorporated?

Vincent Place was officially incorporated on August 11, 2003.

How is Vincent Place funded?

Vincent Place has three components. A Men’s Shelter, Food Bank and a Soup Kitchen. General Funding is received from Federal Government, Trillium Foundation and the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

  • The Men’s Shelter is funded through Ontario Works primarily as well as other Government Agencies and private/corporate donations.
  • Food Bank receives donations of food through campaigns (food drives), from businesses (Rome’s Independent Grocers being one of our major donators), fundraisers and from individuals.
  • Soup Kitchen receives most of their donations from individuals and also from Groups such as Church, families and organizations that cook on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Where can I Donate?

You can donate by cheque, cash or online at our website by clicking on the donate button payable by credit card. You can set up a one time donation or a continuous monthly donation. When you donation online you can download and print your own official receipt. All donations are handled by a secure website www.canadahelps.org who is also a non profit organization. enter Vincent Place in the search area.

Donations made by cheque or cash will be acknowledged by receipt from Vincent Place.

Can I specify as to where the money goes to?

Yes you can specify where you would like your donation to go to.

  • General Funds is divided – 70% to shelter, 20% to food bank and 10% to soup kitchen.
  • Men’s Shelter – 100%
  • Food Bank – 100%
  • Soup Kitchen – 100%

It is your choice as to where you would like to donate your money.

I would like to volunteer, who do I contact?

You can drop by Vincent Place at 222 Albert Street East between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and request a volunteer application. Or you can download the  Volunteer Application here. You can fax the application or bring it to Vincent Place. We have four areas that you may volunteer in, they are the Men’s Shelter, Food Bank, Soup Kitchen and Thrift Store. We at Vincent Place will match you in the area of interest. A screening for certain volunteer positions is needed.

Who can Volunteer?

Any person with an interest to serve the less fortunate in our community as long as you are over 18 years of again.  If not, you must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Does Vincent Place shelter house women, men and children?

Vincent Place is only designated as a homeless men’s shelter for men over the age of 18 years old.

How can I become a Board Member?

You must be 18 years or over and a volunteer in one of the components. Board of Directors is made up of 5 Vincentians who are members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and 8 non-Vincentians. An individual must be a member of the Corporation for a minimum of 30 days before applying for membership on the Board of Directors.  Non-Vincentian Directors shall be elected by a majority of the members at the Annual General Meeting which takes place in September of every year. Current Board of Directors can also nominate and contact individuals from the Community to let their names stand for election. Elected Directors shall serve for a term of 3 years. What are the requirements to receive food from the Food Bank?

Anyone can apply for assistance, however there is a three month window between the times you can receive help. If you require more assistance during the 3 month, have a case manager (such as Ontario Works worker), fax a request to Vincent Place. Please have a valid identification ready when applying for assistance such as a driver’s license, health card, status card or a letter from your case manager.

What if I need clothing instead of food?

We can help, simply receive a referral from a case manager and go to our Thrift Store. The Thrift Store will gladly assist you with clothing. If you need help with furniture, you will have to meet with the manager of the Thrift Store and set up an appointment for an assessment. You can reach the Thrift Store at 253-6577, Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
